Heidelberg is worth a visit at any time of year.

But on two evenings each year, the city transforms into a truly special spectacle. The castle glows red, cannons thunder across the Neckar River, and a spectacular fireworks display illuminates the sky above the Old Bridge. Here, I'll share my favorite spots to experience and photograph the Heidelberg Castle illuminations.
The romantic city on the Neckar River has captivated visitors for centuries : philosophers strolled along the Philosopher's Walk, and many have fallen in love with Heidelberg. Whether for just a day or a week, there's always something to discover . The Old Town, with its narrow streets and shops, invites you to wander, the Neckar meadow is a popular spot for barbecues and volleyball, while the Odenwald forest and the Neckar River offer numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.
The Heidelberg Castle illumination takes place twice a year.
This year on July 11th and September 5th, 2026.
The fireworks usually begin after nightfall, around 10:15 pm .
Although I have seen the fireworks countless times, I try to attend at least once every year.
I know that many people consider fireworks to be cruel to animals, pollute the air, and make unnecessary noise. I can certainly understand these arguments. Nevertheless, I love the traditional castle illuminations.

The history of Heidelberg Castle illumination

The dramatic red glow of the fire is a reminder of the years 1689 and 1693. During the War of the Palatine Succession, troops of the French Sun King, Louis XIV, destroyed large parts of Heidelberg and burned the castle to the ground. The world-famous castle ruins were created.
That is why the castle is still illuminated in red after three cannon shots, before the actual fireworks begin.
Then the song " Ich hab mein Herz in Heidelberg verloren" (I lost my heart in Heidelberg ) is played , before the big fireworks display illuminates the sky above the Neckar River.
The tradition goes back even further: As early as 1613, a large fireworks display was set off to welcome Elizabeth Stuart, the English king's daughter and later Electress of the Palatinate, to Heidelberg.
My favorite spots for castle lighting
1. The castle terrace – the best place ever!
For me, the most beautiful place is the castle terrace.
However, there is a catch: you can only gain entry with a ticket for the castle festival, which is taking place at the same time.

These tickets are usually sold out well in advance.
Those lucky enough to get a ticket will experience the castle illumination from a unique (exclusive) perspective – with a view of the Old Bridge, the Neckar River and the fireworks.
2. The Scheffel Terrace
The Scheffel Terrace is located right next to the castle.
From here you can see the castle, the Old Bridge and the Neckar River. It's one of the most beautiful spots in Heidelberg for taking photos.
The downside: It fills up very quickly.
If you want a good spot here, you should arrive early.
3. The Philosopher's Path
The Philosopher's Walk is also one of the classics.
From the opposite side of the Neckar River you can see the old town, the old bridge and the castle.
Unfortunately, one of the best viewing platforms is now closed due to the risk of collapse. Nevertheless, there are still many beautiful spots along the trail. Here too, the advice is: arrive early.

4. The Neckar meadow
Those who prefer a more relaxed experience can enjoy the fireworks from the Neckar meadow.
With a view of the Old Bridge and the castle, you sit right by the river here.
My tip: Pack a picnic and arrive early. That way, the evening will be an experience even before the fireworks.
5. The Nepomuk Terrace
One of my personal favorite spots is the Nepomuk Terrace at the northern end of the Old Bridge.

Food and drinks are only available here on the evenings when the castle is illuminated. A live band also plays from 6 pm. While you can't get both the castle and the bridge in the same shot from here, the atmosphere is unique.
My tip for photographers
If you really want to take good fireworks photos, you should bring a tripod.
As you can see from my pictures, I usually don't do that.
I want to enjoy the evening and experience the fireworks, instead of constantly focusing on camera settings. That's why I'm shooting with short exposure times – and accepting that the pictures won't be perfect.
Supporting program for the castle illumination
Nepomuk Terrace
A small beer garden on the Nepomuk Terrace invites visitors to linger from 4 pm to 11 pm. Live music starts at 6 pm.
Kornmarkt
A craft and goods market takes place on the Kornmarkt from 11 am to 8 pm.
Bismarckplatz, Anatomy Garden & Neckar Riverbank
From Thursday to Saturday, numerous fairground stalls around Bismarckplatz, Anatomiegarten and Neckarufer provide food and drinks.
Concert in the Church of the Holy Spirit
A concert to accompany the castle illumination will begin at 6:15 pm in the Church of the Holy Spirit.
My tip for getting there
The castle illuminations in Heidelberg always get very crowded. Many streets around the Neckar River are closed, and parking spaces are scarce.
I therefore strongly recommend that you travel by public transport.
