I would never give up.

That’s certainly not my motto on the mountain. I give up all the time. I give up because the weather is bad. I give up because the conditions aren’t right. I give up because I or my fellow hikers or I am not fit enough. Because what is more important in the end? Getting to the top or my safety?

The stage through the west face of the Razor is certainly something like the royal stage of the Alpine crossing from Salzburg to Trieste. The path winds spectacularly through the steep face. From below, we had no idea what the route would be like. We had ideal conditions and were all fit. So this stage was no problem for us. We certainly wouldn’t have done it with the danger of a thunderstorm.

You can’t just walk into Slovenia!

Well, you can, but the trail from the mountain pass is difficult to find and overgrown. So we slid, stumbled and skittered into country number 4: Slovenia.

It’s amazing how quickly we can walk when a thunderstorm is approaching. We were lucky to reach our first Slovenian hut safe and dry.

You can’t just walk into Slovenia!

Well, you can, but the trail from the mountain pass is difficult to find and overgrown. So we slid, stumbled and skittered into country number 4: Slovenia.

It’s amazing how quickly we can walk when a thunderstorm is approaching. We were lucky to reach our first Slovenian hut safe and dry.

Cheating? No! There’s not enough time!

When we started planning the Alpine crossing, I realised that I didn’t have 28 days. I asked Christof @einfachbewusst.de the author of the Rother hiking guidebook Salzburg Trieste, which stages we could skip. His answer was: none!

However, the three days from Greifenburg to Tarvisio are easier and don’t go high up into the mountains. So we took a train to Italy.

From Tarvisio, it’s still a long hike along a concrete cycle path, but the beautiful Slizza Gorge, the stunning Laghi di Fusine lakes and the perfectly located Refugio Zacchi made day 16 a wonderful day that felt like a real holiday 🤪
