5 sights in Muscat, Oman that you shouldn't miss

Muscat is different from many capital cities in the Middle East. Instead of skyscrapers and glitz, a calm, elegant atmosphere prevails: white buildings, minarets, mountains in the background and the sea always close by – and that's precisely what makes it a perfect starting point for a trip through Oman.

In this guide I will show you the most beautiful sights in Muscat , cultural highlights, cafes, accommodations and beaches.

1. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque – one of the most impressive buildings in Oman

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is undoubtedly Muscat's most famous landmark – and a place that deeply impresses even visitors who otherwise have little to do with mosques. The architecture is monumental yet harmonious: light sandstone, delicate details, vast prayer halls, and a special tranquility that one immediately senses.

My tip: If you want to experience the atmosphere of the mosque in peace, then come as close as possible to the entrance at 8:30 am.

The mosque is particularly famous for its hand-knotted carpet and the large chandelier inside.

Important to know:

Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque daily except Fridays from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., provided they wear appropriate clothing (hair, ankles and wrists must be covered).

2. Mutrah Souk – traditional market with oriental flair

A visit to the Mutrah Souk is one of the most authentic experiences in Muscat. The narrow alleyways, the scent of incense, spices, and perfume, and the subdued lighting create an atmosphere straight out of 1001 Nights. Here you'll find everything: from silver and gold jewelry to fabrics, spices, and handicrafts, as well as souvenirs like my fun Sultan Matryoshka doll.

My tip: The atmosphere on the Corniche is especially beautiful at sunset.

The promenade “Mutrah Corniche” runs directly along the seafront in front of the souk.

3. Mutrah Corniche – A walk between the sea and the mountains

The Corniche connects the souk with the port and offers a great view of the sea.

The Masjid-Al-Rasool-Al-A'dham Mosque with its distinctive dome, the surrounding mountains, and the traditional dhows on the water. Especially in the evenings, when the temperatures become more pleasant, the atmosphere here is relaxed and lively – locals and travelers alike gather for a stroll. The Omanis are among the friendliest people I have ever met. It's very easy to strike up a conversation with them. Unlike in many other Arab countries, they don't try to sell you anything here, they simply want to chat.

4. Al Alam Palace & the forts Mirani and Jalali

Al Alam Palace , the Sultan's official palace, is nestled between two historic forts: Mirani and Jalali . Although the palace itself is not open to the public, the setting is impressive. The architecture blends traditional Omani elements with modern touches and stands out distinctly from the surrounding buildings.

My tip: Al Mirani Fort offers a fantastic panoramic view. There's also a lovely café on the rooftop terrace.

The restaurant is open from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

5. The Chedi Muscat – Day Pass for Relaxation & Luxury

The Chedi Muskat is a luxurious five-star hotel right on the seafront.

My tip: Lying here under the palm trees overlooking the sea was pure luxury in the truest sense of the word!

Those who can't afford or don't want a room here can still enjoy the pool and beach as day guests. The spacious grounds, multiple pools, well-maintained gardens, and direct beach access make it a perfect place to relax.

Information:

EAT

My favorite restaurant is the Café Farah is right by the sea. A great place for breakfast, lunch, a quick break, or dinner. Modern cuisine meets oriental influences, served in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Kalabash Lounge is ideal for the evening: good drinks, pleasant music, and a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for winding down the day – especially after a visit to the Corniche or the souk. I didn't find the location, which is a bit out of the way, particularly spectacular, but the food is absolutely delicious.

SLEEP

The Chedi Muskat This is certainly the most luxurious hotel in the capital. Here you sleep in small white villas in a palm grove right by the sea.

The Lana Villa guesthouse is really great and right next door. Separated from the sea only by a quiet road, owner Oliver Wensauer also runs Active Oman , where he rents out jeeps and equipment. He's available at breakfast to offer advice and assistance (also in German) to adventurous travelers before and during their trip.

TRANSPORT

Within Muscat , the best way to cover shorter distances is by taxi . You can book them cheaply using the Otaxi app .

For your trip in the country, I recommend the Jeeps from Active Oman , see also SLEEP.

CLOTHING

In the city, you should wear long, loose-fitting clothes; ideally, your ankles and wrists should be covered. When visiting a mosque, women also need to wear a headscarf.
