Montenegro – a small country in the Balkans with enormous adventure potential. Between rugged peaks, crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, and ancient stone towns, lies an outdoor paradise for explorers. Here are my top 5 experiences & GPS data in Montenegro that you shouldn't miss on your trip.

1. Old Town and Views: Exploring the Bay of Kotor
The medieval town of Kotor is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also the perfect starting point for a spectacular hike. Here you'll find my suggestions for outdoor experiences in Montenegro's most famous city, complete with GPS data.

The climb to the fortress of San Giovanni over the fortress walls rewards you with a view over the fjord-like bay.
The coolest thing is the little passage that leads to the Sveti Dorde church.
To do this, climb down a ladder through a window at the fortress. GPS data for this hike can be found on Outdooractive . If you like, you can combine the tour with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old town and enjoy the atmosphere at the harbor in the evening.

Tip : Kotor is hopelessly crowded during the day. If you want to enjoy this beautiful city, come early in the morning or in the evening.
Tip for outdoor enthusiasts: The 15-kilometer hike from the village of Donji Orahovac to Perast takes you up to the Sveti Andrija Fortress. You can find the GPS data on Outdooractive.
From the fortress of Sveti Andrija you have the most beautiful view of the Bay of Kotor.
2. Photo stop deluxe: Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan is one of the most photographed motifs in Montenegro – and rightly so.

The tiny island used to be a luxury resort (but has mysteriously been closed for some time now) and is therefore currently inaccessible.
The panoramic view from the lookout point above the coastal path is a real highlight.
The viewpoint at sunset is magical
3. Pure mountain adventure: climbing Bobotov Kuk

Want to see Montenegro from above? Then you have to climb Bobotov Kuk!
The country's highest peak (2,523 m) is located in Durmitor National Park and offers a challenging hike with magnificent views.
The bizarre rocky landscape of the Durmitor Mountains is particularly spectacular at sunset.
My tip: You have a great view around the Sedlo Pass.
Outdoor tip: You can find the GPS data and detailed description for a circular tour in this blog post.
4. Ulcinj: Sundowner at sunset on Ulcinj's Long Beach
In the south of Montenegro, Ulcinj has one of the longest beaches in the Adriatic: Velika Plaza.

Ideal for anyone who loves wind and waves.
The old town of Ulcinj offers Mediterranean charm with an oriental touch.
Tip: If you're looking for action, go swimming. If you want to chill out, enjoy a sundowner overlooking the waves.
5. Wild and lonely: The Accursed Mountains near Plav
In the northeast lies a nearly untouched gem: the Prokletije, also known as the "Accursed Mountains." Around the town of Plav, you'll find dramatic peaks, tranquil mountain lakes, and rarely traveled trails. Perfect for hiking, trekking, or simply admiring the scenery.

We did the ten-day Peaks of the Balkan hike from Plav through Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo
Outdoor tip: You can find the GPS data and a detailed description of the Peaks of the Balkans hike in this blog.

Bonus: Climbing in Montenegro
Whether on the limestone at Smokovac near Podgorica or on the sea cliffs near Bar – Montenegro also offers plenty of routes for climbing fans .
My favorite area was Zupci - there is a waterfall bubbling under the rocks and a small, crystal-clear pool for swimming.
Tip: Information about areas and difficulty levels can be found on the climbing app the Crag
Montenegro is still a real insider tip for outdoor adventurers. If you love nature, mountains, and a bit of adrenaline, you'll love this country. Have fun exploring!
